I’ve been getting a lot of invites to learn how to cut your grocery bill in half, and extreme couponing. I understand that in a certain financial situation coupons will definitely help save money and allow you and your family to survive. To me, there is a difference in surviving and thriving.
thrive
- to prosper; be fortunate or successful.
- to grow or develop vigorously; flourish: The children thrived in the country.
survive
- to remain alive after the death of someone, the cessation of something, or the occurrence of some event; continue to live: Few survived after the holocaust.
- to remain or continue in existence or use: Ancient farming methods still survive in the Middle East.
- to get along or remain healthy, happy, and unaffected in spite of some occurrence: She’s surviving after the divorce.
There is only 1 reason why I don’t clip coupons.
NUTRITION- What nutritional value do Oreos, Toaster Streudel and Digiorno Pizzas have? The side of the carton will tell you one thing, but the ingredients alone could tell you another. What are the real food ingredients in the items that you are getting for practically nothing? Before you buy:
- Do you recognize the ingredients?
- Would your great-grandmother recognize them as ‘food’?
- Are there fruit or vegetables listed, or just concentrates?
- Sugar or High Fructose Corn Syrup?
I challenge you to read the ingredients before you buy. Really know the food you are feeding yourself and your family. Are we just eating to get along or to really prosper?
AMEN Sister! This is the reason I don’t coupon either. I just don’t eat the food that is on the list. The grocery store is the one place that I don’t worry about price, but get to shop purely on quality. I love it!
I agree 100%, there are never coupons for fresh vegetables, fruits, meat, etc… Also, whever anyone posts a picture I never see any ingredients that would make a meal, all I see are snack foods. Great post!
I agree! I don’t use coupons unless it is something I already buy. Most coupons are not for items I want to have in the house. Saving money on something I wouldn’t normally eat or shouldn’t be eating is not saving money to me. I but what we eat and don’t worry so much about price either.
[...] my ability to find a bargain. But all of a sudden, I find myself feeling uneasy… why? Because I don’t clip coupons! I enjoy shopping… A LOT! But I enjoy getting a good deal even more. I just can’t seem [...]
[...] While I admit I have the deepest respect for couponers, I am not and will never be an extreme couponer. I use them when I have them for the few items I buy in which they are offered. It is even my hope to be better about coupons. However, most of the items I buy don’t have coupons such as fresh fruits and veggies. I have to agree with The Cavewoman’s Kitchen’s post on Surviving vs Thriving: Why I don’t Clip Coupons. [...]
I agree, so many packaged foods have very little nutritional value. I clip way less coupons than I used to and only for stuff I already intend to get. The other thing about coupons is making us buy 2 or more to get the deal, with Kroger adding quantity to the requirement if you use it (oh, you got 3 for $1 off? how about 5 for $1.50 off!)
I looked into the possibility, but I came to the same conclusion you did. I just don’t buy those items. I do collect coupons though (here in Canada we can’t do extreme couponing) to give to a coworker who purchases food stuffs for the food banks.
